Education / Workforce

Recent advancements in technology, coupled with the arrival of remote learning and the increase in virtual work, have forever transformed our educational system as well as the traditional workplace.

No longer are students or workers tethered to their schools or office buildings. Instead they have the freedom to learn and work from virtually anywhere. Unfortunately, not everyone has been able to tap into this new paradigm due to the lack of Internet access or a computing device at home. Even if equipped with the necessary technology, students in rural communities across the United States are unable to access the essential broadband capabilities needed to tap into online content and experience virtual classes. Similarly, many parts of the country are not suitable for remote work without the access to high-speed bandwidth, which has become a basic requirement for getting the job done.

Advancements in technology have also impacted the skills needed to enter the modern workplace. Technological innovations such as artificial intelligence, big data, and virtual reality have revolutionized the way work is done and the types of jobs that exist. This means that tomorrow’s workers will need to have basic digital literacy. Bringing broadband to rural America and unserved communities is a fundamental first step to ensuring that our future workforce has the skills necessary to participate in the global workforce. The second step is assisting those communities with broadband adoption, meaning teaching Digital Literacy and ensuring Digital Equity reaches to our most disadvantaged residents.
